Program & Facility Cancellation Guidelines
The following guidelines are used by the Oswegoland Park District to determine the cancellation or modification of activities due to weather. Weather cancellations for activities are posted on the Park District website at oswegolandparkdistrict.org/programs-events/weather-cancellations.
Participants and parents/guardians of participants have the ultimate responsibility to make decisions regarding participation in an activity based on weather conditions.
Outdoor activities may be modified by the Oswegoland Park District due to excessively hot or cold temperatures. In the event of extreme temperatures, activity cancellations will be posted on the Park District website at oswegolandparkdistrict.org/programs-events/weather-cancellations.
Lightning & Thunder
The Wave Siren Lightning Prediction System is installed at Fox Bend Golf Course, Old Post Park, Prairie Point Community Park, PrairieFest Park, and Wormley Heritage Park. Park users must adhere to system warnings and take shelter when a warning signal has sounded. Activities may not resume until the system has sounded an all-clear signal. Lightning systems are not failsafe and systems are not located in all parks therefore, common sense and independent judgment must also be used.
The system uses two warning signals:
One 5 second blast: Lightning is imminent. Take immediate cover in a building or hard-top vehicle. When the above is not available, seek dense woods or low-lying areas.
Two 3 second blasts: Danger reduced / all clear
Light: A strobe light also flashes until danger is reduced.
The Oswegoland Park District uses the following guidelines and procedures in the determination of winter weather program cancellations and facility closures.
When School District 308 classes are cancelled for the entire day due to inclement weather, Oswegoland Park District programs* will be cancelled until 12:00pm. Decisions on classes held after 12:00pm will be made by approximately 10:00am and be posted at oswegolandparkdistrict.org/programs-events/weather-cancellations.
*With the exception of Kid’s Connection which will be cancelled for the entire day.
On non-school days or during after school hours, the Park District will monitor weather conditions and facility accessibility to determine if programs will meet.
The closure of park district facilities will be dependent upon weather conditions and facility accessibility. The Park District will monitor weather conditions and facility accessibility to determine if park district facilities will remain open. Facility closures will be posted at oswegolandparkdistrict.org/programs-events/weather-cancellations.
The above are merely guidelines, participants and parents/guardians of participants have the ultimate responsibility to make decisions regarding participation in an activity based on weather conditions.
When the Park District remains open during inclement weather, it is the decision of the individual (or parent/guardian of minors) to attend a scheduled program. Refunds are not given unless the program is cancelled by the Oswegoland Park District.
